Un Maestro Más
Bringing Teachers to Rural Bolivian Schools.
A group of friends in La Paz Bolivia including Marcela Siles de Gerke, Roberto Gonzalez met to discuss the need of rural teachers. The Bolivian government did not fund teachers in small rural communities. We decided to raise funds for rural schools by forming a non-profit organization “Un Maestro Mas” (The One More Teacher Program). We identified communities that built their one room school and were willing to provide room and board to a teacher, preferably from their own community. We raised funds by enlisting support from private companies, American school, and social events, thus we were able to provide fifteen teachers to fifteen communities in rural areas in La Paz. Additionally, we offered training to teachers and provided school supplies and books to children.
